How to Prepare for a Reiki Session

Stepping into your first Reiki session can feel both exciting and a little mysterious. You may wonder what to expect, how to prepare, or whether there’s anything special you need to do beforehand. The good news is that Reiki is simple and gentle — you don’t need to do anything elaborate to benefit from it. That said, a few mindful steps can help you feel more at ease and allow you to get the most out of your experience.

Arrive as You Are

One of the most comforting aspects of Reiki is that it meets you exactly where you are. Whether you’re feeling stressed, tired, joyful, or uncertain, Reiki flows to support you in that moment. There’s no need to dress or act a certain way. Just wear something comfortable and come with an open heart.


Give Yourself Time to Slow Down

If possible, try to give yourself a little breathing space before your session. Arriving rushed or distracted can make it harder to settle into the calm Reiki provides. Even a few quiet minutes to breathe deeply, stretch, or sit in stillness before you begin can make a big difference. Think of your session as a gift to yourself — a pause in the middle of your busy life.


Setting an Intention

One of the most powerful ways to prepare for Reiki is to set a gentle intention. This doesn’t need to be complicated or specific. It might be as simple as, “I am open to receiving healing,” or “I allow myself to relax and release what no longer serves me.” An intention is like a soft guidepost for your energy — it tells your body, mind, and spirit that you are ready to receive. You don’t need to force anything or expect a particular outcome. Reiki naturally flows where it is needed most, but your intention can help you align with that process.


Trust the Experience

During your session, let yourself relax and trust the process. There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki. Some people feel warmth, tingling, or waves of calm. Others simply feel deeply rested. Your role is simply to allow yourself to receive. The more you surrender to the experience, the more nourishing it can be.


After Your Session

Once your Reiki session is complete, give yourself time to integrate. Drink some water, move slowly, and notice how you feel in the hours or days that follow. You may experience a sense of lightness, clarity, or emotional release. Each experience is unique, but all are part of the healing process.


At its heart, preparing for Reiki is less about “doing” and more about “being.” It’s about showing up with openness, kindness toward yourself, and a willingness to receive the healing energy that is already available to you.
